About the workshop

“Sound and silence go together. If you don’t understand sound, the depth of sound – but we have separated sound from silence. Sound is the word, sound is your heart beating; the universe is filled with sound – universe in the sense, the whole earth, all the heavens, the million stars, the whole sky is filled with sound. Obviously. You don’t have to listen to scientists about it. And we have made that sound something intolerable. So, we want to have a brain that is quiet, peaceful. But when you listen to sound the very listening is the silence. Silence and sound are not separate.”

“You know silence has its own sound. The silence that thought creates is noisy. The silence of a brain that is free has its own peculiar sound. Out of that sound is creativeness. In that silence with its sound there may be something, that which is limitless, timeless. That may be the eternal love. Do you understand?”

J. Krishnamurti

The modern human civilization seems to have become a civilization of noise. Noise has become an inevitable part of our daily life. Noise of traffic, noise in factories, noise of our daily activities, noise of quarrels, noise of wars are only some of the examples of how noise has become a part of our life. Noise occupies the physical as well as the psychological space of our life. Our entertainment has become noisy, our worshipping has become noisy, our prayers have become so loud and noisy that one wonders whether the god of these worshippers is hard of hearing. What is noise? What is sound? Is sound different from noise? When does the sound become noise? Noise is a disorder and our brain cannot function properly in disorder. Therefore, we are always seeking silence away from noise? Our very search for silence has become noisy. What is the root of noise? Can that be uprooted. Can silence be part of our daily life instead of noise? The world of sound and the nature of silence will be explored in this workshop. The questions raised by the participants will also be taken up for consideration. Various selections from Krishnamurti’s works relevant to the theme of this workshop will be provided as a reading material to each participant. Also links to the relevant videos of Krishnamurti will be provided. Each participant is expected to devote these two days fully to the study in order to benefit maximum from this workshop.
